{742-814}
He was six feet four inches tall, and built to scale.
He had beautiful white hair, animated eyes, a powerful
nose...a presence "always stately and dignified." He was
temperate in eating and drinking, abominated drunkenness,
and kept in good health despite every exposure
and hardship.
—Eginhardt (the King's secretary) describing Charlemagne
Charlemagne is the most famous ruler of the Middle Ages
and a key figure in all of European history. He was king of
the Franks (768-814), king of the Lombards (774-814), and
emperor of the Holy Roman Empire (800-814). The achievements
that have secured Charlemagne's place in history are mainly
due to his hunger for power, his Christian faith, and his
astute leadership qualities. Charlemagne's greatest
achievement is the Carolingian Renaissance, a revival of
European political cultural life that arose during the later
Middle Ages. During this time, Charlemagne encouraged
education by reintroducing Latin and having books and
manuscripts copied. At this time, a new type of writing,
known as Carolingian minuscule, came into use. The present-
day use of capital and lower-case letters, punctuation and
word spaces dates from the Carolingian era. Under
Charlemagne, European commerce was revitalized
through the construction of new roads and bridges, and
through standardized weights and measures, tolls and
customs dues.
By unifying European states, he blocked the spread of
Islam to Europe and profoundly affected the course of
history by Christianizing the Saxons, ancestors of
the British.
On Christmas Day in 800, while Charlemagne
knelt in prayer in Saint Peter's in Rome, Pope Leo
III seized a golden crown from the altar and placed
it on the bowed head of the king. The throng in the
church shouted, "To Charles the August, crowned by God,
great and pacific emperor, long life and victory!"
Of the lines I have to Charlemagne
this one is through Matilda of Flanders (b c1032,
